Taking Shetland out of the Box

Island Cultures and Shetland Identity

7-10 May 2009, Lerwick

 

Taking Islands out of the Box‘s theme was the role of islands as meeting places for cultures and the influence these meetings have on the formation of local identity. The event featured 57 speakers from 22 sovereign states and autonomous regions, with presentations covering disciplines such as Folklore, Place Branding, History, Anthropology, Economics, Heritage Studies, and Geography. The programme included a ‘Perspectives on Island Autonomy’ session and discussion forum series with participation from island politicians and high-ranking civil servants. Bo Almqvist and Carsten Jensen were keynote keynote speakers.

 

Financial support  was provided by the European Commission Office in Scotland, Nordisk Kulturfond, the Royal Historical Society, and the Shetland Fudge Company.
