Taking Islands out of the Box‘s theme was the role of islands as meeting places for
cultures and the influence these meetings have on the formation of local identity.
The event featured 57 speakers from 22 sovereign states and autonomous regions, with
presentations covering disciplines such as Folklore, Place Branding, History, Anthropology,
Economics, Heritage Studies, and Geography. The programme included a ‘Perspectives
on Island Autonomy’ session and discussion forum series with participation from island
